New Jersey, The Garden State, is a mid-Atlantic coastal state. Originally part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland, it became a territory in 1664 under the control of the British and was renamed after the English Channel island of Jersey. New Jersey was one of the original thirteen colonies. New Jersey is bordered to the north by the State of New York, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the State of Delaware, and to the west by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. New Jersey is approximately midway between Boston and Washington DC. The northeastern counties of New Jersey are frequently considered to be part of the New York City metropolitan area while the southwestern counties are influenced by their proximity to Philadelphia.
Due to its location between major metropolitan areas along the east coast, New Jersey highways are among the most heavily traveled in the country. New Jersey has one of the largest container ports in the world and is home to the largest petroleum container system outside of the Middle East. Several major professional sports teams play in New Jersey, though only a few identify themselves with the state including the New Jersey Nets (NBA) and the New Jersey Devils (NHL).
